PASTURE RAISED POULTRY

About our chicken
The meat chickens we raise are a Cornish Cross breed. We pick them up from Jenks hatchery the day they hatch and we raise them to about 8 weeks of age. They spend the first 2-3 weeks in a mobile brooder in our back yard with heat lamps. We still move them daily until they are ready to go out on pasture. While they are on pasture they are in mobile chicken coops (pictured above). We move the coops EVERY day.
Along with the grass and clover from the pasture the chickens are fed a local, Non-GMO feed from Mosaic Farms in Philomath (mosaicfarms.com). The feed is corn and soy free. We process, package and freeze the birds on site. Anyone is welcome to come observe on processing day. Please call or email ahead to let us know you will be visiting us.
2021 processing dates are set!

Why pastured poultry?
There are many advantages to raising chickens and other poultry on pasture. The birds are able to obtain some of their diet from the pasture which we believe produces a product that has more flavor and a wider diversity of nutrients.

Raising the birds outside and giving them fresh pasture daily creates an environment that is clean and more natural which results in a happier healthier bird. They are able to scratch the ground and eat the occasional bug or worm that they find. Basiclly the chicken is allowed to act more like a chicken.

Raising animals in a rotational system like this is also beneficial to the land on which they are raised. The animals provide a small disturbance and a good concentration of nutrients (in the form of manure) and then the land is left to rest. We have green squares in our pasture everywhere the chicken tractors have been!
